ŽPCG Orders Three New Passenger Train Coaches

ŽPCG has ordered three new passenger coaches from Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF), a Spanish manufacturer of locomotives and railroad cars.

The purchase agreement was signed on 27 October and the cars are due to be delivered on 1 July, 2013. The total cost of the deal is 13€m and includes maintenance equipment and spare parts.  The purchase is being financed through a government-backed EBRD loan.

ŽPCG currently operates seventy-four passenger cars:

  • 31 passenger coaches
  • 32 sleeping and couchette cars
  • 10 car-carrier wagons
  • 1 buffet car

These three new 165-seat cars will enable ŽPCG to add passenger service between Podgorica and Nikšic. The 56km line currently only supports freight traffic, but ŽICG is upgrading it to support higher speeds, electrification, and modern signaling. The line currently only supports speeds of 30Km/h; the upgrades will enable it to support speeds of 75 to 100 Km/h. Once these higher speeds are available, the journey between Podgorica and Nikšic should take only about 40 minutes. This will make commuting between the two cities much more convenient and help bring Montenegrin’s together.
