The EU and Montenegro Began Preparations for Accession Negotiations

The European Commission and the Government of Montenegro are beginning the preparations for accession negotiations that will start in June 2012. After the meeting with Igor Luksic, Stefano Sannino (the EU Commission’s Directorate General for Enlargement) said that the work would focus on the 23rd and 24th Chapter of the Acquis.

These two chapters are related to justice, fundamental rights and rule of law, and they will be the first to consider, according to the new policy of the European Union.

PM Luksic was encouraged by the fact that the European Union has already begun the preparations. He said that Montenegro would remain committed to the integration process, and continue to work on reforms.

Mr. Sannino said that the Commission wanted to begin the process of preparation for accession negotiations as soon as possible.

He also said that a lot of work would have to be done and he stressed that it was very important to start immediately. Mr. Sannino congratulated Igor Luksic for his personal leadership.
