Reporters Without Borders Ranks Montenegro’s Press Freedom

Reporters Without Borders’ Press Freedom Index 2010 ranks 178 nations in terms of freedom of the press.  The top ranking nations are Finland, Iceland, The Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Montenegro fell 27 spots to rank a dismal 104th on the list. In comparison, Bosnia and Herzegovina ranked 47th, Croatia ranked 62nd, and Serbia ranked 85th.

The report data is not gathered scientifically.  Questionnaires are sent to journalists, researchers, jurists and human rights activists — each of whom will have personal political agendas. A more scientific study would require centralized data collection and verification by an objective body of reviewers.

Nonetheless, despite the obvious flaws in the studies methodology, the people of Montenegro and their government remain committed to improving press freedom in the country.  This is also a requirement for membership in the European Union.
