Mixed Results for Economic Freedom in Montenegro

The Heritage Foundation has released the 2012 Index of Economic Freedom and Montenegro has held steady at 62.5, ranking it in 72nd place out of 179 nations. Due to the deteriorating condition of freedom across the globe, Montenegro improved from a ranking of 76th to the current ranking of 72nd even though our overall score did not improve.

Montenegro’s rankings in each individual category which comprises the final score are as follows:

69.2 Business Freedom
55.0 Investment Freedom
83.6 Trade Freedom
50.0 Financial Freedom
91.3 Fiscal Freedom
40.0 Property Rights
31.7 Government Spending
37.0 Freedom from Corruption
81.2 Monetary Freedom
86.1 Labor Freedom

Over the last year, Montenegro achieved improvements in three areas:

  • Fiscal Freedom (89.4 to 91.3)
  • Government Spending (28.6 to 31.7)
  • Monetary Freedom (76.0 to 81.2)

At the same time, however, economic freedom in Montenegro fell in three areas:

  • Business Freedom (71.3 to 69.2)
  • Freedom from Corruption (39.0 to 37.0)
  • Labor Freedom (92.3 to 86.1)

Montenegro’s score of 62.5 places it third among the nations of ex-Yugoslavia:

  • Macedonia – 68.5
  • Slovenia – 62.9
  • Croatia – 60.9
  • Serbia – 58.0
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina – 57.3
