The Herceg Novi Mimosa Festival

Having changed hands several times, Herceg Novi has a rich and varied cultural history and it has survived its turbulent past with stoicism. The beautiful town of Herceg Novi has many varieties of vibrant flowers and exotic plants. In a short trip down the streets you can feast your eyes and senses on a variety of flowers ranging from the pristine jasmine to oleander, honeysuckle and pretty magnolias. It is then, small wonder that this town now houses several Montenegrin artists and also hosts regular exhibitions.
Every February, in honor of the mimosa flower which is believed to herald spring, the town of Herceg Novi hosts a festival called the Mimosa festival. The colorful festivities come alive with cultural events, sports events, carnivals and masked balls. The first Mimosa festival was held in 1969 by the Tourist Association of the Bay of Kotor and the Municipality of Herceg Novi and now, tourists and the natives can look forward to participating in the 42nd Mimosa festival in February 2011. The festival is typically celebrated for weeks and other than the cultural events, people also greatly enjoy roasting delicious fish on this occasion. Needless to say, wine flows freely to add zest to the celebratory mood. The visitors can take home a sprig of mimosa as a souvenir to remember this special festival. Some of the activities during the Mimosa festival include flower exhibitions, art exhibitions, literary events, music performances, sports events and fun activities for children. The entire festival is founded on the principles of carnival traditions. The cultural essence of this festival is further enhanced by the presence of young Herceg Novi majorettes and the lively city band. The masked parade walks through the town, cheerfully waving the first blossoms of mimosa.

So, while the rest of Europe is engulfed in snow, Herceg Novi would be a perfect destination to head to, with pretty mimosas setting the mood for the festival held every year in its honor. Tourists can get a taste of the rich culture and tradition of this scenic town and be a part of this traditional festival.
