Peter Stano, the spokesman for the European Commissioner for Enlargement Stefan Fuele, spoke at a press conference on Friday at the headquarters of the European Union. Mr. Stano spoke to clear up some misunderstandings regarding the entry process of Serbia and Montenegro into the EU.
Mr. Stano explained that the European Commission maintains its recommendation that Serbia be granted candidate status in December, and Montenegro be granted a date to start negotiations. This position has not changed since it was officially announced on 12 October.
This is despite a published white paper from Germany and France proposing further delays in the process. That white paper was drafted before the 12 October announcement. That proposal has absolutely no authority, because it has not been approved by the 27 member European Council.
