Beat the Heat in Montenegro

The high temperature in Podgorica tomorrow is forecast to reach 39c (102f) . Herceg Novi, Kotor, and Budva are all forecast to experience a high of 36c (97f). Weather like this, aside from being too warm to be pleasant, can be unhealthy and even dangerous.  Here are a few tips to help you survive, and even enjoy, the Summer heat.

Stay Hydrated

Drink lots of water.  In dry Summer heat, most of us don’t realize how much water we lose in sweating, because the sweat evaporates almost instantly.  Drink more water than you think you need, the extra water isn’t likely to cause you trouble.  Plus, if you put some ice cubes in the water, it makes a great way to cool down even further.

Wear Light Colors

Dark colors are dark because they absorb light.  When light is absorbed, it turns into heat.  The same temperature will feel a lot warmer if you are wearing a dark shirt than if you are wearing a light colored or white shirt.

Schedule Trips Early or Late in the Day

If possible, get you grocery shopping and other errands done before the day has had a chance to heat up or after it has started to cool off.  Stay indoors in the afternoon, when the heat is at it’s worst.

Take a Cool Shower

Take a cool refreshing shower during the day to clean off the sweat and lower your body temperature to a more comfortable level.

Get a Haircut

Thirty percent of your bodies heat loss occurs from your head.  Have the barber take off some of your extra insulation.

Keep the Sun Outside

Close your curtains and window shades during the day to keep the hot sun outside.  Open them at night to let the cooling air in.

Turn Off Unnecessary Lights

Most electric lights generate a lot of heat.  Keep them turned off when possible to avoid adding their heat to your environment.

Just think, in a few months it will be Winter again and you will be missing the heat!
